Backyard birds?
By admin | May 30, 2008
kari asked:
I have decided to try and get into some backyard bird watching/feeding. I have been searching for a good book online, and am having difficulty in telling if it is what I am looking for. Anyone know of a good book that will explain about types of birdhouses, feeding/feeders, things that go along with all of that, and possibly (hopefully) including some kind of a guide to help you identify the backyard birds in your yard?

I enjoy watching birds also therefore I utilize my local Audobon Society (yellow pages), local nature centers, local veternarian offices, local agricultural college extensions (these places have alot of info on local wildlife, plants, flowers, etcetera). I have also found that the Audobon Society will set you up with all the information on what kinds of flowers, plants, bushes to attract various birds. Hope this helps.

I love my little feathered backyard friends. I started watching birds when my boys were doing the Bird Study Merit Badge in the By Scouts and I got hooked. One of the best online sources is eNature.com. They even have a feature where you can keep track of your “sightings.”
The best guide is the Audobon guide. You can find it at most any bookstore.

Check your local library. They usually have lots of books on birds, birdfeeders and identifying species. When you find one that is right for you, you can get it at a book store .
My favourite book for bird identifying is by Roger Tory Peterson.
Here is a link to get you started. Have fun!
