“Backyard Breeder”?
By admin | June 1, 2008
Laura ? asked:
The term has admittedly become passe, although these disreputable and irresponsible breeders have increased exponentially.
People who are classic “backyard breeders” don’t consider themselves one because they have their litters (or “just one litter”) in the kitchen, laundry room, barn, whatever.
There has GOT to be a more appropriate term, one that encompasses all of the things the classic backyard breeder (of purebreds as well as mutts) does and does not do.
This is a serious question — any ideas on a more contemporary term for these people, one that might replace the antiquated misnomer of “backyard breeder?”
Here is my favorite link that compares and contrasts responsible breeders with back yard breeders. Maybe it will help spark some brainstorming and ultimately a term that will one day be included in Webster’s.
http://st15.startlogic.com/~justonel/breeder.html
A term that would really hit home with people considering breeding. Something so vivid and objective and neutral thatno one would want their friends, family and neighbors to refer to them as such.
I’m trying to stay away from name calling, that’s why I posted the previous additional details. It would need to be an objective, accurate term in order for people to really consider themselves one. Maybe there’s no such thing, I don’t know.
Maybe something along the lines of “uneducated” but the term really should not be blatantly derogatory — just subtle.
Gringo is spot on — “For Profit Breeder” has the connotation I was looking for.
Great one for brainstorming, thanks Gringo.
“Home breeder” — that’s another good one to brainstorm. Thanks!

Here in the Midwest, we call these places puppy mills. So I would call an owner of such place a puppy mill owner.

This question came up on Friday I think.
I’m now posting any answers I have with the term Reputable breeder. I’m not going to get into the details with people about this in my question. I know what a BYB is and there are far too many out there…
The Reputable breeders (here) know who they are. If we call the people who post questions here names - we lose them completely and the circular arguements start - people get banned and off we go to the races.
I just don’t address anyone by any other term. I say “Reputable breeders xxx….”
It’s not worth baiting anyone with names. We can all tell what category they fit in by their questions.
EDIT: The thing is, coming up with a name isn’t the answer. BYB IS THE NAME. It pretty much says it all. Why do you think so many people get upset if they are called this?
No one wants to be called any type of name. And honestly, do you think what we call them makes any difference to them at all?
We have to come up with a new approach. I say education is the way to go. No name calling, no pointing fingers. Let’s put a face on the problem and educate people. Talk about where one of their pups could end up… We have to do something different people because the fighting isn’t working.
And by the way, I am as big a spay/neuter advocate as any of you.
great link btw. =)

I love the comparisons!
very true, I prefer to use terms like “irresponsible breeder” or “uneducated breeder”
it’s not totally fitting but people who are just starting to learn about “backyard breeding” seem to understand words like “irresponsible” and “uneducated” better than they can follow all the dog lingo that someone whose be in the dog world for years would know and understand
I find it funny that terms like “backyard breeder” and “puppy mill” roll off of my tongue and I have no question about what it is, I was raised knowing what they were! but then to say those terms around someone who is just learning about them, the person wouldn’t have a clue what you were talking about!
again, great link!

“Irresponsible Pigs”.

ooohhh good question. You are correct - people that breed irresponsibly do not consider themselves puppymillers nor do they consider themselves backyard breeders. So we DO need a new term.
We have people that have oops litters (but still choose not to spay their dog and go through with having the litter). We have people that breed because they want a puppy. We have people that breed because their dog gives good kisses. We have people that breed because it’s their dog’s right to have babies. We have people that breed because they think their dog is “pretty”. We have people that breed because they think their dog is AKC registered and that means something! We have people that breed for money. We have people that breed mutts because there is a “demand” for these so-called designer dogs (e.g. cock-a-poos, the next AKC breed I am told) (these are ALL people and questions that have appeared on YA!)
So what do we call people like that? While they are all irresponsible breeders, that doesn’t have a ring to it. So we need a term for these people.
What shall the term be????
Knuckle-head breeders?
Shelter contributors?
Low-quality breeders?
Twinkie-head breeders?
Numskull breeders?
Gotta be something to describe them. What can the spay and neuter police come up with so that we can call them what they are . . .

VERY good link, thanks very much, I’ve saved to dog folder for those people who insist on breeding their pets to make $$, give to relatives, have just one litter and show the miracle of life to their brats. Overpupulation contributers? No quality control breeders?

How about the Seriously miss informed breeder!

June 25th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
I call them scumbags. It seems to fit, and I haven’t had an answer removed yet by using it.
If you want a socially acceptable term for them, how about “shelter suppliers”?

I loved the link. I’m not so sure about inventing a new term, but “For-Profit Breeder” is my favorite so far.

I put this in one of my questions the other day:
“Wanna-Breeds.”
All they think of is themselves- like a little kid- I WANT I WANT I WANT!!!
EDIT: Zack- you ALMOST nailed it! How about “GREEDERS?”
July 4th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
i agree with howl-dine.
“wanna-breeds” like, who would honestly pay 250 for a mutt?
July 6th, 2008 at 3:11 am
Disreputable. You have reputable breeders, and then we have the “for profit breeders”, the “Lassie NEEDS a litter” breeder, and the “everyone wants one of Lassie’s puppies” breeders who I think we can all agree are not doing the research, or testing, and not making quality management efforts in any way. Anyone being that irresponsible is also, by definition, disreputable.

I can think of a ton of names that go thru my head each time I see someone spouting off about breeding cuz it’s their right to do so… but I do like the “For Profit Breeder” cuz that certainly is what they are after. Even if they do it to “show the kids the miracle of birth”, you just know they are thinking “and I can make money off the puppies”.
