Backyard: Removal of pea gravel or bits of weed blocker?
By admin | May 10, 2008
Robert H asked:
A part of our backyard has weed blocker and pea gravel. I was wondering if this all needs to be removed before we till up the whole backyard and lay sod - if i dont will this cause a big problem? Thanks

I’d definitely get rid of both; there’s no sense in having poorer soil than you must.

Well, yeah. The soil must be prepared before sod can go down. Soil compaction must be eliminated, oxygen must be reinstated, nutrients added. So yes, the gravel and weed blocker must go. No sprinkler system?

Remove the pea gravel and as much of the weed block as possible before you till. The more you do to prepare the soil to accept the sod the healthier the sod will be in the long run. It will also root into the soil better. You may want to add fresh topsoil to the area after the gravel and landscape fabric is removed depending on the soil quality you find below.
Don’t have the sod delivered until the entire area is ready to sod. The effort you put into properly preparing the soil now will pay off everyday that you have your yard.
