Best way to make fire pit with clay soil and still have proper drainage?

By admin | December 15, 2007

snowboardin58 asked:

We would like to make a fire pit in our backyard. The problem is, our groud is made up of a lot of clay, which would affect drainage. We have a steel portable fire pit, but we would like one a bit bigger in the ground. What is the best way to go about making a fire pit in the ground? Thanks

Dig the pit 18″ (half metre) deeper than you need it and put rocks or sand in the deeper part. This will drain off much of the water until it evaporates or leeches into the surrounding clay soil. The ash from your previous fire material will absorb the rest.

u dig a pit and make a hole on its back, where u would have also to dig a small pit, there u put up a pipe with its direction upward. This chimney will allow one to carry smoke upward with speek. two the cycle of air entering the pit and out will be complete for smooth burning.we try it when community kitchens are arranged.

I would build it up a little if the area is low. Make a concave soil surface surrounded by rocks as a bit of containment.
