Chiminea vs Fire pit - what’s best?

By admin | October 29, 2007

cavapasmieux asked:

I'm thinking of buying a chiminea or fire pit (Gas patio heater out of question as not eco-friendly), it will be placed on the decking and I need to think about safety aspect with 2 young children.
Any recommendations?

I like the chiminea myself. Out camping I like a fire pit.

dangerous to touch - safety screen needed where there are children

Place some slates under the legs - these are fireproof

I’d go for a chiminea, but you need to re-think your “eco-ideas”. How is burning long-dead trees, (gas), better than burning fresh trees, (charcoal or wood)? As long as you re-plant new trees, you can be carbon-neutral either way.

I myself have a Chiminea which is excellent, if you do get one you must remember that they can be dangerous, put a 3ftx2ft slab on your decking before hand to save any burning, remember to keep children away from it. Fire pit is a different story all together with a Chiminea it is partly enclosed,a fire pit is more open so in any wind(especially on wooden decking) it can become very dangerous. not forgetting anyone falling into it after a drink or two. I think you should go for a good old Chiminea.
The clay ones have a lot shorter lifespan than cast iron.
    Have fun.

A traditional chiminea design is easier to light and more efficient to burn because of proper drafting. Compared to a fire pit, a chiminea is much more enjoyable and you will use it a lot more often then a fire pit because it can be used in breezy situations where a fire pit will not be safe. Clay falls apart and cast iron rusts, so get a good cast aluminum one and it will last for many years. See The Blue Rooster Companies “10 Free Tips to Buying an Outdoor Fireplace” and the “FAQ” section for more information on chimineas and fire pits.
