Laura ? asked:

The term has admittedly become passe, although these disreputable and irresponsible breeders have increased exponentially.

People who are classic “backyard breeders” don’t consider themselves one because they have their litters (or “just one litter”) in the kitchen, laundry room, barn, whatever.

There has GOT to be a more appropriate term, one that encompasses all of the things the classic backyard breeder (of purebreds as well as mutts) does and does not do.

This is a serious question — any ideas on a more contemporary term for these people, one that might replace the antiquated misnomer of “backyard breeder?”

Here is my favorite link that compares and contrasts responsible breeders with back yard breeders. Maybe it will help spark some brainstorming and ultimately a term that will one day be included in Webster’s.

http://st15.startlogic.com/~justonel/breeder.html
A term that would really hit home with people considering breeding. Something so vivid and objective and neutral thatno one would want their friends, family and neighbors to refer to them as such.
I’m trying to stay away from name calling, that’s why I posted the previous additional details. It would need to be an objective, accurate term in order for people to really consider themselves one. Maybe there’s no such thing, I don’t know.
Maybe something along the lines of “uneducated” but the term really should not be blatantly derogatory — just subtle. <sigh> Maybe education is the only answer.
Gringo is spot on — “For Profit Breeder” has the connotation I was looking for.

Great one for brainstorming, thanks Gringo.
“Home breeder” — that’s another good one to brainstorm. Thanks!

Is this just a precaution they are required to put in the instructions? Do any of you have an outdoor fireplace on a wood deck? If I got one of those fireproof “grill mats”, would that suffice?

I have been searching for a good book online, and am having difficulty in telling if it is what I am looking for. Anyone know of a good book that will explain about types of birdhouses, feeding/feeders, things that go along with all of that, and possibly (hopefully) including some kind of a guide to help you identify the backyard birds in your yard?
