Fireplace Dilemma?

I have a fireplace in my TV room, and the fireplace itself is about 2.5 feet long by about 2 feet high, but it is surrouned by about 5 feet of brick on either side and about i foot of brick above. Basically, a decent sized fireplace surrounded by alot of brick. On the top is a small concrete mantel shelf. I am redecorating my TV room and hate the fireplace, any suggestions on how I can make it more appealing. I'm thinking of maybe encasing just the mantel area with wood and ornate moldings...any other ideas?

You could paint the brick for an inexpersive fix, but if you really hate the brick and want A totalty different look you can encase it in wood and moldings like you said,if you have the skills needed the wood can be really nice but if you have to hire the work out it can be pricey.
Another option would be to use A cultured stone veneer for an informal look or slate,travertine,tile for A more .
contemporary look.
If there is enough wall space on one side of the f/p you could frame out an area to inset your tv finish it to match the f/p

Paint it. That’s the most cost effective way. Or tile over it. It is a lot of work, but the pay off is huge. I would also add floating shelves on either side that mimic the concrete mantle. Not too many though you want to keep it simple and sleek.
