Fireplace screen?

I just purchased a fireplace screen to go in front of the fireplace… We have a screen that slides in front of the fire but embers will pop out or the logs will shift and a couple times they have rolled out. I got the screen so the cat wont lay in front of the fireplace and risk get hurt by flying embers or hot logs rolling out on to him. But we have noticed that even though the screen is metal/mesh… it seems to block a lot of the heat. I was wondering if it is acting as a heat sink, the heat hits the metal screen that is sitting on ceramic tile. If you move the screen it gets really warm in the living room really fast. Anybody else experience this?

Yep! We finally got rid of the screen, but you can have blowers put in and they will distribute the heat into your home that the screen is holding back if you really want to keep the screen up for your pet.

Screens do block a lot of heat. In a poorly designed fireplace more than 50% of the heat can be reflected back into the fireplace and out the chimney. I think most people finally end up not using the screen unless they are leaving the room–then they use it for safety.
As for you cat–that is a dilemma.
