Gas fireplace wont light?
By admin | October 26, 2007
John I asked:
Im home for Christmas on leave and Im trying to start mom and dads fireplace. The pilot light was out and I was able to re-ignite it but when I turn the fireplace control from off to on it extinguishes the pilot light. I dont know too much about the gas fireplace and was hoping someone could shed some light on my situation. Thanks for any help.

You have to hold the pilot light ignition valve on for like 2 minutes before the flame will stay lit, also make sure that the gas line is on all the way, You could be lighting small amounts of gas left in the line, without enough to light the fireplace.

If the pilot stays on by itself there must be something wrong with the control valve. Chances are the thermocouple is bad and the pilot won’t stay on without you holding the valve in. simple /cheap repair.

If the pilot stays lit, once you release the red button on the control valve, then the thermocouple is fine. If the pilot goes out and the burner fails to light when you try to turn up the thermostat, then the main valve has blown the one time thermal fuse that’s located in the back of the unit, and the whole valve assembly will have to be replaced.

The first and easiest thing to check: It could just be dust in the pilot. Try blowing the dust out of the pilot with a straw.
