Help with Backyard Ponds!?
By admin | May 16, 2008
theresa m asked:
So My mom and I decided we want a backyard pond in our backyard. Nothing too big, because we don't have such a big backyard. We bought a small plastic pool that is about 1 foot deept, and 2 feet across. So we dug the hole, put the plastic pool in, and filled it with water. The area gets about 5 hours of sun a day, so its in a good place. I'm not planning on having fish, but I would like a few plants. I know water lillies and cattails are good options(the dwarf size), but what other plants? Like which plants would go under the water, or are there any others I shoulld get? What about plants going in the dirt around the pond? And rocks, should I put rocks in the pond? I've done a lot of reserach, just needing helping in the plant area. Thanks!

I hope you know if you don’t circulate that water it will turn into a stink pool. I would keep the plants out of the water and put them around the pond.
I would throw in some copper sulfate to kill the slime. You could use chlorine like in a pool but that will not last as long.
Or go buy a pump and filter.

Dwarf horsetail, some submergents, and plant Japanese iris in or around your pond. Put rocks in, they help clear the water through biological process. Consider a small pump and fountain head to aerate the water. Get dwarf lilies, regular ones are too big for your pond. It’s a little early, but check your local Home Depot in about a month and they should have some pond plants. Reconsider not having fish, unless you put mosquito donuts in regularly you’ll raise mosquitoes in short order. A few mosquito fish will thrive in your little pond, and control the mosquitoes.

Because your pond is so small I don’t know how many plants or rocks I would place inside your plastic pool. Around the basin of pool you can fit rocks and plants to either make it look more natural or modern looking.
Here is a couple photo links for ideas:

http://www.skippysstuff.com/note18_8.jpg (this one has small waterfall which is something you can do very easily with small circulating pump)
If you do go with water plant I would go with the floaters but be aware that water hyacinths or water lettuce or water lilies spread quickly so start out with only 1 or 2. Cattails …even dwarf size still take up quite a bit of room so I don’t know putting these in water.
Plants you can place around the pond base:
Iris
Corkscrew rush (such a cool plant)
Sweetflag (grass like) can get plain green or variagated
small ornamental grass (blue fescue is great)
Papryus
Last link has detailed water garden descriptions of each plant

I hope this helped!
