put big rocks in a circle and wood in the middle. oak wood is the best for cooking on or you can by the rod iron fire pits at wal-mart or home depot they look nice too

Yup make a 4 foot or whatever size pit you want and line the bottom wth rocks. They absorb heat and will help you maintain a good fire as well as reflect more heat.

The ultimate in cheap fire pits! If you have a big enough space and the area is free of flammable stuff, simply dig a small depression in the dirt or gravel, surround it with stones and throw in your firewood! Its as simple as that. Again, be sure there are no flammable materials around which could be ignited by the fire or flying embers. If you choose the size of your rocks well (you’ll need big ones) and you make the size right, you can even lay a grill grate on top of your homemade fire pit to barbecue great food over your fire!

It’s pretty simple…
Dig a hole about 6-12″ deep and 4′ in diameter
Surround the hole with rocks and fill with sand or rocks or both(i like the rock idea b/c they would retain and emit heat for your cooking).
Just be sure not to use river rocks. The smooth ones you find in a river b/c from what I hear they can explode due to moisture trapped inside.
As far as cooking, either use food in tinfoil that you place directly in the fire (use tongs) or get a couple of big rocks and place them across from one another so that you can prop a grill over the fire. Either way some hickory smoke blocks or other flavorful wood will really make the food taste good.
Have fun.

Go to a truck junkyard and buy one of the rims that require a locking ring. These are open through the middle and about 10″ high in the middle. They are about 22″ in diameter so easy to find a grate to place on top for cooking. Clear away grass and such where you want to put it and spread sand so it drains easily with rain. All the campgrounds I have visited used this method.

One of the coolest homemade fire pits I’ve ever seen was made from the iron laundry tub of an old washing machine. They made metal legs for it, so it was about 6 inches off the ground, and the perforations in the tub made for perfect ventilation for the fire. It also heats up the iron to the point where it takes all night to cool. So, it continues to radiate heat long after the fire is out.
Some friends of mine had it while we were out camping one weekend. That thing was awesome. And, you could easily put a round BBQ grate over the top of it for cooking. All you need is someone who can weld the metal legs on it and you’re good to go.

You go outside and squirt some lighter fluid on your pit then light it up.

I had one that used to be an old “oil drum” style barrel, sawn in half length wise, set in an iron base. Works really well, you get two for the “price” of one, and you’re recycling too.
