It’s for roasting marshmallows and weenies!
It’s a macho thing.

If it is done correctly you can cook anything on a fire that you would cook in the kitchen. I would love to have an outdoor kitchn with a big fire pit, wood burning stove and oven. How awesome!

Hmm. Well you can learn how, it isn’t too hard but you have to remember to keep it clean and dry and protected from the sun when not in use. Also you need to find out how much it costs to build one.

i bought one for my parents last summer and they use it all the time and i liked it so much that i bought one for my wife. You can cook limited things but the best is going out on a nice night and sitting down to a fire. Very good way to relax.

it’s very nice on a cool summer day to sit around the open fire and enjoy the family. yes, many of the pits have a grill on them.

What is the point? Apparently you’ve never drank beer over an open flame before. It’s probably the greatest thing on the planet. You can burn stuff in it. You can hear your spit sizzle on the logs. You can get rid of trash. You can cook food on a spit, a stick, or on a grill you place over the fire. In the dead of winter, there are few feelings like having to alternate facing toward or away from the fire as one side of your body freezes and the other side melts. Burn, baby, burn.

I believe you are referring to one of those chiminea type of fire pits. Some are relatively enclosed with a chimney while others are pretty much a large dish. You can cook on them but most people just use them to create warmth and ambiance. They really are great if you don’t have a patch of dirt to build a camp fire. But, a grill is best for cooking. Keep in mind that the deck fire pit will need some accessories for cooking - usually sold separately. Be careful of spilling hot ashes on your deck, of course. They’re not too expensive and it’s so cool to have a little fire for entertaining on the deck. Go for it, you’ll probably enjoy it.

I love to cook outdoors. After dinner I think it is romantic to sit by a fire, have a drink, and just sweet conversation.

I have a grill, a smoker and I want a fire pit. To sit around at night and to watch like a fireplace. If you live someplace you can do so, BUILD a combination fire pit. Look up online how to make an outdoor fire pit / grill. Then you get both!

No you can’t really cook on it and that’s what the gas grill is for anyway. I too thought what’s the point when my other wanted one. I thought great… one more thing to clean and watch after since it is fire on a deck. Plus one of those things you get and after a while hardly ever use (ie: really super expensive hot tub). I didn’t see the need but I said sure since she has good taste. Turned out to be a pretty cool thing when you have people over. Sure people turn on the outside light and light some candles when everybody is sitting around having a drink but the firepit added something special. My friends invariably said that they had thought about doing it but now that they saw it they wanted one as well. I would definitly get one of the ones that stands on the deck instead of built in.

Oh Yeah you can cook on it not to worry. It’s a good investment I say go for it. He gets what you want and you get to do less cooking! Tell him to get a cast iron skillet they are really heavy it will give him a nice workout as well.

A firepit is exactly that. A pit with fire in it and it is primarily for warmth not cooking and if you’d like to cook on it there are certain woods you cannot use when cooking foods so be mindful of that.
