What do to with an ugly corner fireplace?

By admin | October 2, 2007

Ila M. A asked:

Okay, we have a dilema. We just recently bought a house buily in 1907. Beautiful house, except....the fireplace. We are completely remodeling the entire house to fit our style. The fireplace is in the corner of a tiny living room and the corner is in between 2 archways!!! It is the only logical place for ANY tv...needless to say the fireplace is no longer the focal point of the room, but the tv is. We will never be able to actually use the fireplace; its gas & it is just a very challenging spot. The fireplace has UGLY yellow/greenish marble that was poorly put up. Ideas on how to make the space more comfortable & to fix the fireplace problem???

Answer to one question:***Our style is sort of Modern I would think, slightly contempory. We like a warm atmosphere full of life and very inviting.

Our tv hangs up, therefore we have no use for an entertainment center.

We actually thought about ripping it out, like many people have stated as a response. Then, tiling with earth tones.

Have you thought about one of the pre-made fireplace mantels? Or you might could have one custom made so that it fits over the fireplace, and gives it a more updated look.

I’d rip out the fire place, put up sheet rock, and the nessecary wood required to do that. Problem solved.

If you want to tear out a fireplace and put in a television set, one has to wonder what style you are remodeling the house to. The obvious solution is to tear out the fireplace completely and replace it with an entertainment center. Possibly one in the style of the house. Where the tv can be shuttered away when not in use.

before you do anything drastic have a certified chimney inspector come over and look at your fireplace. If there is nothing that can be done to make it work beside replacing then you have two options.

1st Option: Rip it out and replace it with a brand new electric or another gas fireplace. They have some really great models these days.

2nd Option: Disconnect the gas, seal it up and put plywood over it to make a flat surface. You could maybe make a couple of display shelves out of this area to showcase your tv and useful storage space for dvd players and remotes. and then drywall it so that it looks uniform with the rest of the house.

There are so many options these days that your possibilities are endless. But first talk to someone who knows what they are doing and are licensed to be doing it. Do your homework and you will be rewarded.
