I am under the impression you are referring to actually cooking “in the pit”, and if so I came across an awesome site. This link will actually take you directly to the page that i was viewing. Titled “Backyard Barbeque Pit”.
Here’s the link..http://www.motherearthnews.com/library/1980_May_June/Backyard_Barbecue_Pit
Possibly just “Copy Shortcut/Paste directly into your browser”…Good to go..!
What time is Dinner?
Good Luck and have Fun

Check the lumberyards or places like Lowes or Home Depot. I remember there WAS a very good book on building firepits and Barbecues at some of those places.

Sunset has one of the best books I’ve seen on firepits and BBQ plans, with material lists, a variety of designs, step by step building instructions with drawings and pictures, trouble shooting guides and pitfalls. I got mine in the book section at the Lowes. We especially like the fact that we could have the book right on site, easily accessible as problems and difficulties arise because they offer great tips.
